When
the 2006 Cotton Bowl odds came out we found Auburn as a slight
favorite over the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Nebraska is making strides
back to glory under Bill Callahan and they are finally to the point
where they are playing a New Year's game against a top 10 opponent.
The Huskers themselves are rated no. 22 in the land and are back playing
after New Year's for the first time in a decade. Nebraska gave
fans something to hope for this season after going 8-4 last year with a
win over Michigan in the Alamo Bowl. The problem the team ran into
against Oklahoma in the Big 12 championship game was that they got
behind early and were forced to throw the ball 20 straight times at one
point in the game.
Auburn has to
be a little disappointed to be here after being ranked as high as no. 2 in the
BCS standings earlier in the season. The team does hold the only win over
the Florida Gators this season and no. 4 LSU, but a couple of home losses to
Arkansas and Georgia left them here instead of in the SEC Championship game.
Unlike the drought Nebraska has had, the Tigers are playing in their third
straight New Year's Day bowl.
Both of these
teams have played a tough schedule, with Nebraska going against four Top 10
teams and Auburn against three. It should be an interesting game between
the Big Red offense and the stingy Tiger defense. Auburn is seventh in the
country in scoring defense at 13.9 ppg and 25th in yards at 297.5.
Nebraska on the other hand is 13th with 32 ppg and balance it out to the tune of
253.2 passing ypg and 175.6 rushing ypg. To see which team prevails it's
