The inaugural 2006 Texas Bowl will feature no. 16
Rutgers and Kansas State from Houston, Texas. Rutgers can be happy
about the first back-to-back bowl bids in school history, but the
Scarlet Knights had their eyes on a BCS bid after that amazing start.
The triple overtime loss to West Virginia in their last regular season
game gave the conference title and BCS bid to Louisville instead.
The 10-2 mark was definitely a start for a team that has only been to 2
bowls in it's history and beating Louisville earned them their first top
10 ranking in the school's history. Last year the Scarlet Knights
lost 45-40 to Arizona State in the Insight Bowl and the school still is
winless in the post-season. They are going to have to continue to
rely on their defense to win this one, as the team has only given up
14.7 ppg this season.
Kansas State got off to a bad start under first-year coach Ron
Prince, but won three of their last 4 games to become bowl-eligible. The
Wildcats were picked to finish last in the Big 12 North, which is weak to begin
with, so the bowl bid comes as a much welcomed surprise. The big win came
on November 11th when K-State took down no. 4 Texas. Kansas State hasn't
played in almost a month and a half, but their offense was clicking when they
last took the field.
