Very even is what the 2006 Champs Sports odds show the Boilermakers and Terrapins. Both of these teams wanted very much to return to the post-season after disappointing 5-6 years a season ago.

Maryland’s season was all about capitalizing on any edge they had, including winning five straight games by a total of 13 points. The team beat up on teams they should have, but went only 1-4 against top 25 opponents. The Terps may have some problems with the high-powered Purdue offense, as they closed their season with a 38-24 defeat to Wake Forest in which they allowed the Demon Deacons to run for 296 yards. Maryland has been a good post-season team though, winning their last three trips to the post-season, including a 41-7 win over West Virginia in the Gator Bowl three years ago.

Purdue once again had a high-powered passing attack, ranking sixth in passing offense at 293.7 ypg and 10th in total yards at 425.8 ypg. The Boilermakers had lost three out of their first four Big 10 games, but came away with three straight to become bowl eligible. Since the team played 13 games, they needed seven wins to receive an invite. Defensively the Boilermakers have plenty of problems as they are allowing 27 ppg and lost their last two appearances in the bowls.

Opponents have only converted 26% of their third down attempts and Everette Brown has gotten to the quarterback 12.5 times (the team has 36 sacks overall.) That means if the Badgers get into third and long they are in trouble. The Seminoles offense will be paced by the running game which has racked up 182.8 yards per game this year. That rushing attack will do just enough to guide this team to a two touchdown victory.

I see Florida State scoring between 21 and 28 points in this one to pick up the low-scoring blowout victory. FSU’s speed on defense will really stymie this Wisconsin offense. The Badgers rely solely on running the football, and Florida State has the studs up front to stop the run. Against the 3 best defenses the Badgers have faced this season, Wisconsin managed just 7 points against Penn State, 16 points against Iowa and 17 points against Ohio State. The Badgers have not played a game since the 22nd of November, so they will come out sluggish having not played in over a month. With Florida State having the home-field advantage Saturday, I love their chances of covering this spread in a game played down in Orlando, Florida. The Seminoles are 3-1 on the road this season, winning by 10.5 points/game. Their last road game was a 37-3 triumph over Maryland. Expect a similar result Saturday. My prediction is a 27-14 Seminoles’ victory. Wisconsin is 0-8 ATS versus good defensive teams – allowing <=310 yards/game over the last 2 seasons. The Seminoles allow just 292 yards of total offense/game. FSU is 26-13 UNDER in their last 39 road non-conference games.
