The Chick-fil-A Bowl pits the ACC against the SEC and this year’s match up features a pair of teams that haven’t met in nearly 15 years as Virginia faces Auburn.

The all-time series between these two sits at 1-1 with Virginia winning the most recent meeting, 19-0 back in 1998.

The latest Chick-fil-A Bowl odds list the Auburn Tigers as 1-point favorites, while the total has been posted for 49 points.

Virginia

The Cavs were riding the momentum of four-straight wins to end their regular season before Virginia Tech stopped them in their tracks with a 38-0 defeat in their regular-season finale. Virginia did earn a 5-3 record in conference play, and won games at Miami and at Florida State as part of a 4-1 record away from home this season.

Defensively, Virginia ranks a respectable 32nd nationally in scoring defense (22 points per game) and surrenders 343 yards per game (215 passing, 128 rushing) while recording 19 sacks and forcing 21 turnovers one of which was returned for a touchdown (Chase Minnifield, interception).

Steve Greer leads the defensive unit with 103 tackles (22 more than anyone else), adding two sacks and one fumble recovery, while Matt Conrath has three blocked kicks and two forced fumbles to go with two sacks and 64 tackles. Rodney McLeod has four interceptions with 55 tackles and Cam Johnson has four sacks with two forced fumbles.

On offense, the Cavaliers rank just 88th nationally in points scored (23 ppg) while compiling 397 yards per game (232 passing, 165 rushing). Michael Rocco has completed 60 percent of his passes for 2,359 yards and 11 TDs with 11 interceptions. The offensive line has allowed 15 sacks.

Perry Jones and Kevin Parks anchor the running game by combining for 1,544 yards and 13 touchdowns on 4.9 yards per carry. Kris Burd paces the receiving corps with 60 receptions for 810 yards and one TD, while Jones has 41 grabs for 416 yards and three scores.

Auburn

The 2010 national champion started its title defense with a 4-1 start, but it has alternated wins and losses the last seven games, and is coming of a 42-14 Iron Bowl loss to Alabama to finish fourth in the SEC West (4-4). Auburn is 1-4 away from home this year, losing the last three games.

Auburn ranks 80th nationally in points allowed (29 ppg) and allows 406 yards per game (211 passing, 195 rushing) while recording 21 sacks and forcing 21 turnovers with three returned for TDs (Demetruce McNeal and Jermaine Whitehead, interceptions; Kenneth Carter, fumble).

Daren Bates leads the defense with 96 tackles, while Neiko Thorpe has 94 stops to go with a team-high three interceptions. Corey Lemonier has team-highs of 9.5 sacks and five forced fumbles, while Eltoro Freeman has two fumble recoveries and a pair of forced fumbles.

On offense, the Tigers rank 82nd nationally in points scored (24 ppg) while compiling 328 yards per game (175 rushing, 153 passing). Michael Dyer and Onterio McCalebb anchor the running game with 1,774 yards and 14 touchdowns on 5.1 yards per carry.

Barrett Trotter and Clint Moseley have combined to complete 58 percent of their passes for 1,803 yards and 15 TDs with nine interceptions. The offensive line has allowed 31 sacks. McCalebb and Emory Blake are the top pass-catchers with 60 combined receptions for 796 yards and six scores.

Virginia Tech and Georgia will be battling it out and we have the 2006 Chick-fil-a Bowl odds showing the Hokies as a slight favorite. Each one of these schools got off to rough starts before getting things turned around and finishing on positive notes.

Virginia Tech ended the season at 10-2 but lost their chance to compete for the ACC championship with consecutive losses against Georgia Tech and Boston College. Since that pair of losses though they have came through with six straight wins, outscoring their opponents by a total of 144-29 during that stretch. Va Tech has consistently got things done, winning 10 plus games in each of the last three seasons, a feat only USC can match. They have four shutouts on the season, so you know that the defense is going to be up to the task for this game. The Hokies lead the nation with just 9.3 ppg against and 221.1 ypg against.

Georgia on the other hand lost four of five games in the middle of the season, including embarrassments against Vanderbilt and Kentucky. However the Bulldogs battled it out and beat no. 10 Auburn and Georgia Tech to finish strong. Last year Georgia also played in Atlanta for their bowl, when they lost to West Virginia in the Sugar Bowl. This team should be grateful to be at a major bowl after the little losing streak they hit in the middle of the year, so don’t expect a let down from them. Georgia’s defense may not be quite as tough as Va Tech’s, but they are holding opponents to 17 ppg and 5.7 yards per pass attempt.

I’m taking the points with LSU. The Yellow Jackets exceeded expectations this year while the Tigers underachieved. However, while those results have given us excellent line value, it should be remembered that the Tigers played in a much tougher conference. I feel that LSU matches up very well vs. the Yellow Jackets. I also believe that the Tigers are far more talented and dangerous than their record indicates.

Georgia Tech has successfully implemented Paul Johnson’s triple-option attack and runs the ball almost exclusively. However, the extra few weeks of preparation time gives extremely well-coached LSU time to learn all about what the Yellow Jackets do. Additionally, while LSU has had some trouble against the pass, the Tigers were excellent against the run, allowing just 3.3 yards per carry and 106 yards per game.

The Tigers have been excellent under Les Miles in bowl games and I expect them to come in with a chip on their shoulder, looking to prove they are better than what they showed this year. The Yellow Jackets were great when “flying under the radar.” That’s over though and they’re now laying points against a top tier team from an elite conference. Being “expected to win” is an entirely different matter and I look for them to stumble here. *New Year’s Eve Best Bet

I’m playing on LSU and Georgia Tech to finish UNDER the total. This number has climbed from its opener and I feel that the current total is now too high, providing us with excellent value on the UNDER.

Its true that LSU’s defense wasn’t quite as good this year, at least when compared to some of the Tigers’ recent dominating units. However, the Tigers’ “weakness” was against the pass and the Yellow Jackets don’t have the type of passing attack to take advantage.

The Tigers, who have seen the UNDER go 3-1 the last four times that they played in a dome, remained stout against the run this season, allowing just 3.3 yards per carry and 106 yards per game. Overall, LSU permitted a respectable 327 total yards per game.

Georgia Tech’s strength has been its defense, as the Yellow Jackets held opponents to just 18.2 points and 312 total yards per game. Overall, Georgia Tech games averaged 44.4 points on the season, with the UNDER going 6-4 in their games with a total. The Yellow Jackets, who closed out the season with back to back victories, have seen the UNDER go 9-3 the last 12 times they were coming off two or more consecutive wins and 9-4 their last 13 games (with a total) which were played on turf. With a heavy dose of the run from both teams helping to keep the clock moving and strong overall defensive play, I look for this evening’s score to prove lower-scoring than most are expecting and the final combined score to fall beneath the generous number. *Bowl TOM
