The underdogs were certainly barking this weekend in the bowl games with both the Wyoming Cowboys and Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders coming through with outright wins as underdogs. Steve Janus, one of our top-rated college football handicappers provided one of his premium college bowl picks on Middle Tennessee State on Sunday. I love how this Middle Tennessee State team finished their regular season, rattling off 6 straight wins. Their last 3 games were particularly impressive with their average game being a 37-17 victory. Southern Miss did have a solid season themselves and finished 2-1 over their last three games with the average score a 30-26 win.

The telling numbers for me in this game have to do with how each team has played away from their home field. Middle Tennessee State finished with a 4-2 road record (4-2 against the spread as well) while Southern Miss went just 1-5 (3-3 ATS) in their games as the visitor.

Middle Tennessee can score fast and they should be able to do just that against a Southern Miss team that gives up 445 yards and 31 points per game on the road this season. Take the points, but this is a game the Blue Raiders can win outright.

Janus 2009 BCS National Title Game Picks

Look, you’ve been hearing about this match up for weeks. Florida wins tonight because they have the better running game. The Gators average about 30 more yards per game on the ground than the Sooners, with less carries per game. The Gators also have more returning starters and more returning letterwinners than Oklahoma does this year. Experience in big games matters. Oklahoma’s defense has looked very vulnerable against strong offenses all season, they’ve just been able to out-score them. Unfortunately for them, I think Florida will do what Texas did to Oklahoma, and that is to rush the hell out of Sam Bradford. That’s the only thing that is going to keep them off-balance, and they have the talent to do it. The Florida Gators are your BCS National Champions this year.

It was another winner for Steve Janus last night on the 2009 International Bowl. This is Buffalo’s first ever bowl appearance, so I do expect them to come out with a lot of emotion, but in the end they don’t have the defense to contain the UConn rushing attack. Connecticut features the nation’s leading rusher, Donald Brown, who ended up with 1822 yards in the regular season. The Huskies also have the better defense in the game, allowing just 19.8 points per game, compared to the 27.5 points per game that the Bulls allow. With UConn’s style of play they may get off to a slow start on the scoreboard, but they should pull away in the second half.

This Nebraska offense really poured it on this year. They averaged 36.2 points per game during the regular season and gained 458 yards of total offense per game. The real question in this game is whether or not the Clemson defense can stop Nebraska. I do not think that they can. The Cornhuskers scored 28 points or more in 11 of their 12 games this season and the only teams that out-scored them were Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Missouri, and Virginia Tech. With the exception of Virginia Tech, these are some of the best offenses in the nation. This will be the best offense that Clemson has faced this year and I do not think they can stop Nebraska, or keep up with them on the scoreboard in today’s Gator Bowl.

Janus 2008 Armed Forces Bowl Picks

Steve Janus is looking to continue his dominance of the books throughout the college football season, and that means finishing the year off strong with his bowl picks. So far this year nobody has done a better job of breaking down the bowl game odds than this expert handicapper and he showed just why he is the best of the best last night in the 2008 Armed Forces Bowl, taking Houston over Air Force and here is why:

You can’t ignore Air Force’s running game, which racked up nearly 270 yards per game this year, but teams that rely almost exclusively on the run have not fared well in bowl games this season (see Navy & Nevada). The problem I have with the Falcons is that they ranked last in the regular season in all of college football in passing yards per game. That strategy got them 7 wins, but I feel that they will struggle to keep up with Houston, who should put up a lot of points on the Falcon’s defense. Houston gained 575.1 yards of total offense per game on the year, the best in the nation. Granted, they weren’t playing against any great defenses, but the numbers are impressive no matter who the competition was. Houston’s defense was shredded by teams like Rice and Oklahoma State, but both of those teams have steady passing games. I think the Cougars can crowd the line of scrimmage and stop the Falcons enough to let the Houston offense take over.

This is a home game for Rice as this year’s Texas Bowl will be held at Rice’s Reliant Stadium. Rice finished the year at 9-3 and put together an impressive offensive season. The Owls averaged 472.2 total yards per game in the regular season and over 41 points per game. Their defense has not played well this season, but it obviously hasn’t mattered much as their offense has almost always put up enough points to cover whatever the defense surrenders. The Owls’ opponent, Western Michigan, also put together a 9-3 season. They had fairly impressive numbers on offense, 29.8 points per game on 422.7 total yards per game, but, much like Rice, their defense was abused for the majority of the season. This will be a shootout to be sure, but Rice has the more explosive offense and should rack up enough points to cover the number.

Wisconsin’s offense relies almost exclusively on the run. With their problems moving the ball through the air, the Seminoles will be able to stack the box and slow down this potent rush attack. Offensively, the Seminoles will give the Badgers a heavy dose of the run as well, the only difference is that the Badgers are not as strong defensively as Florida State is. There’s been so much press about TCU’s defense this year that it’s easy to forget that Boise State also had a phenominal year defensively. TCU gave up 10.9 points per game, while the Bronco’s gave up just 12.2. Offensively, Boise has a slight edge in total yards (457 to 417) and points per game (39.4 to 35.0), but, on paper, these teams are pretty evenly matched. I’m sure Boise is a little disappointed to miss out on a BCS Bowl (you can’t blame them), but this isn’t the kind of team that rolls over, they come out and play their best to prove that they deserved nothing less. I will say that TCU had a tougher schedule than Boise, the Horned Frogs lost to only Oklahoma and Utah, but, all things considered, I think the Broncos could have faired at least as well as TCU in either of those games, and could have beaten any of TCU’s other opponents this year. I don’t know where the idea came from that this is a down year for the Broncos, but that seems to be the sentiment from many experts. I will take them tonight, you just can’t picks against Boise State, period.

Let’s take a look at his first choice of the season, where he went with Arizona over BYU.

For this game I’m looking at who really wants to be here in the Las Vegas Bowl. We’ve got BYU, who had aspirations of winning their conference and being a BCS buster team, but who actually ended up 3rd in their conference (behind Utah and TCU) and in the no-so-glamorous Las Vegas Bowl. Then we have Arizona. The Wildcats are playing in their first bowl since 1998 and were lucky to get into this game, let alone any bowl at all. When you look at each team’s numbers side-by-side you’ll see two very good offenses and one solid defense, which belongs to Arizona. BYU struggled against teams like TCU and Utah because the Cougar defense wasn’t fast enough to keep up. I expect AZ to score early and often and easily cover 3.5-7 points.
