Feist’s Premium Play on Middle Tennessee State/Southern Mississippi OVER 57.5

From the New Orleans Superdome, this should be a fun offensive game indoors with two fast, multi-dimensional offenses. Southern Miss (7-5 SU, 6-4-1 ATS) has done well under Coach Larry Fedora, despite injuries and at times shaky defense (24.5 ppg allowed). The offense lost sophomore QB Austin Davis (9 TDs, 2 picks) halfway threw the year, out the rest of the season after tearing a ligament in his left foot against UAB. Redshirt junior QB Martevious Young (13 TDs, 1 pick) stepped in and has been very good with 1,590 yards passing, 270 rushing. He had a whale of a game against Houston, with 334 yards, 3 TDs and no picks in a 50-43 defeat. Senior RB Damion Fletcher has rushed for 973 yards despite being hampered by a hamstring injury that forced him to miss one game, plus senior RB Tory Harrison (626 yards, 6.6 ypc) and 6-foot-6 soph WR DeAndre Brown (720 yards) lead a speedy offense that averages 33 ppg. They delivered an impressive 44-34 win over Tulsa as Young had 4 TDs, no picks and 276 yards (though the defense allowed 589 yards). Middle Tennessee State (9-3 SU/ATS) missed out to Troy on a Sun Belt title, but did everything else right, riding a 6-0 Su/ATS run into this bowl. The offense is loaded, averaging 31 points, 181 yards rushing and 238 yards passing behind senior QB Dwight Dasher (21 TDs, 14 INTS), a duel threat who leads the team in rushing (938 yards) for first-year offensive coordinator Tony Franklin. The receiving corps is very talented behind senior 6-4 WR Chris McClover (486) and senior WR Patrick Honeycutt. The defense allows 23 ppg and got bombed by speedy Troy, 31-7. Southern Miss defeated Troy in last year’s New Orleans Bowl, winning 30-27 and that was a far better defense than this MTS state. Look for an offensive show, Play Southern Miss/Middle Tennessee State Over the total.

The underdogs were certainly barking this weekend in the bowl games with both the Wyoming Cowboys and Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders coming through with outright wins as underdogs. Steve Janus, one of our top-rated college football handicappers provided one of his premium college bowl picks on Middle Tennessee State on Sunday. I love how this Middle Tennessee State team finished their regular season, rattling off 6 straight wins. Their last 3 games were particularly impressive with their average game being a 37-17 victory. Southern Miss did have a solid season themselves and finished 2-1 over their last three games with the average score a 30-26 win.

The telling numbers for me in this game have to do with how each team has played away from their home field. Middle Tennessee State finished with a 4-2 road record (4-2 against the spread as well) while Southern Miss went just 1-5 (3-3 ATS) in their games as the visitor.

Middle Tennessee can score fast and they should be able to do just that against a Southern Miss team that gives up 445 yards and 31 points per game on the road this season. Take the points, but this is a game the Blue Raiders can win outright.

2009 College Bowls Weekend Game Breakdowns

The bowl game betting season kicks off this week with a three-pack of games for college football handicappers to dig into! Check out BetUS Sportsbook’s trends of note that you should take into consideration before throwing down on the New Mexico Bowl, the St. Petersburg Bowl, and the New Orleans Bowl!

New Mexico Bowl: Wyoming Cowboys (6-6, 8-3 ATS) vs. Fresno State Bulldogs (8-4, 7-4 ATS)… The Cowboys and Bulldogs lock horns in Santa Fe for the New Mexico Bowl to kick off the bowl season on Saturday afternoon. Fresno State was the second largest favorite of any team this winter at the open of 12.5-points, but now stands at (-11) with a game ‘total’ of 55. If you’re just looking at how these two teams stack up against each other conference vs. conference, the decision should clearly go to the Cowboys.

Wyoming is 4-1 ATS in its L/5 games against the WAC, while Fresno is only 1-6 ATS in its L/7 games against the MWC. HC Pat Hill’s bunch is only 5-15 ATS in its L/20 games as double digit favorites. Wyoming is 14-6 ATS in its L/20 games out of conference. The Cowboys are making their first bowl appearance since 2004 (W 24-21 vs. UCLA), while Fresno lost last year’s New Mexico Bowl 40-35 against Colorado State.

St. Petersburg Bowl: UCF Knights (8-4, 9-2 ATS) vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights (8-4, 6-6 ATS)… The UCF Knights will play in just the third bowl game in team history when they take the short hike up the road to Tropicana Field for the St. Petersburg Bowl against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. The Scarlet Knights are 2.5-point favorites, while the ‘total’ has been set at 44. UCF hasn’t had any luck at all against the Big East in team history, going just 2-10-1 ATS in its L/13 tries. Rutgers is 4-1 ATS in its L/5 games against Conference USA foes.

The Knights have covered six of their L/7 games as underdogs, while the Scarlet Knights are 3-0-1 ATS in their L/4 bowl games under HC Greg Schiano. Central Florida’s last bowl game was an ugly 10-3 defeat in the ’07 Liberty Bowl to Mississippi State. Rutgers won last year’s Papa John’s.com Bowl 29-23, pushing as six-point favorites.

New Orleans Bowl: Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders (9-3, 9-3 ATS) vs. Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (7-5, 6-5 ATS)… The Superdome is the sight of the first all-time meeting between the MTSU Blue Raiders and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles for the ’09 New Orleans Bowl. The C-USA reps are 3.5-point choices of BetUS oddsmakers in this one, with the over/under set at 58. Both teams are red hot overall, as Middle Tennessee has covered six straight, while SMS has gone 5-1 ATS in its L/6 overall.

Both teams have also dominated the other’s conference as well. The Blue Raiders are 4-0 ATS in their L/4 against Conference USA, while the Golden Eagles are 7-2 ATS in their L/9 efforts against the Sun Belt. MTSU hasn’t played in a bowl game since 2006, when it lost to Central Michigan. SMS won last year’s New Orleans Bowl 30-27 in overtime against Troy.

2006 New Orleans Bowl Picks

Both Troy and Rice enter the 2006 New Orleans Bowl with 7-5 records. Troy got off to a rough start before coming on strong to reach their number as they won the Sun Belt conference by winning 6 out of their last 7 games. The Trojans have never won a bowl game though and are looking to get that monkey off their back against Rice. History will be against them though as the Sun Belt Conference champion has only won one game out of their last 5 tries in the post-season.

Rice doesn’t have a whole lot of bowl history themselves as they haven’t accepted a bowl invitation for over 45 years. The Owls may be 7-5 on the year, but their backers have cashed in 9 out of 12 times at the pay window. Rice has a balanced attack and has finished the season by winning 6 straight games both SU and ATS.

We are going to go with the OVER in this game as Rice is 8-1 OVER after allowing 24+ points in the first half of their last game and are 8-1 OVER on turf this season. Troy State’s offense has struggled on the road, but their defense has struggled as well. Rice is giving up 32.6 points per game so don’t expect the defenses to do much in this game. I think it goes over easily.

Burns 2008 New Orleans Bowl Picks

Ben Burns is one of the only handicappers who cashed in with his bowl picks on the 2008 New Orleans Bowl. A lot of experts thought they were all over the bowl game lines but Burns is one of the few in the business who came up with Southern Miss and here is why:

I’m taking the points with SOUTHERN MISS. Troy is favored by more than field goal primarily because of having the better record (8-4) and the slightly more impressive stats. However, the Sun Belt isn’t exactly one of the country’s better conferences and the Trojans only non-conference victory came vs. 1-AA Alcorn State, which finished with a 2-10 record. Now the Trojans will be taking on a Southern Mississippi squad which is playing its best football of the season, having won four straight. It should be noted that the Golden Eagles already faced the two teams which finished #2 and #3 in the Sun Belt. They won on the road at Arkansas State and they dismantled La.-Lafayette by a score of 51-21. Including those results, the Golden Eagles are 7-0 (5-2 ATS) their last seven games against teams from the Sun Belt.

The Golden Eagles are capable of putting up big numbers on offense, having scored 70 against UAB and having scored 27 or more in eight games overall. In fact, they set the school record this season with 5,220 yards of total offense. Additionally, the defense has been superb lately. During the four game winning streak, the Golden Eagles surrendered only 35 points, holding each of those opponents to less than 260 yards of total offense and under 100 yards rushing. I expect the Golden Eagles to carry that positive momentum into this evening’s game and look for them to move to 4-1 ATS the last five times that they played with two or more weeks of rest in between games. *Main Event
